They are getting ready for the final assault. Institutionalized Italian Mafias won’t surrender, as they want to size control of the International Port of Trieste, starting with the so called “Old Port” meaning the Northern Free Port. And, in order to do that, they would do anything.
After the Port Authority confirmed that the Northern Free Port cannot be modified and it is to remain a Port area, as established with the Treaty of Peace of 1947, leading to more and more ruffled and aggressive reaction from a certain part of the local public administration, which assists to the vanishing of a great business opportunity.
The leader of this assault it the City Council of Trieste (Major Cosolini) ruled by P.D. (Partito Democratico – Democratic Party, which currently rules Italy with premier Renzi), supported by the Region (president Serracchiani) ruled by P.D. as well, and by the local administrations, once again controlled by a center-left wing ready to sell off any piece of our Territory to make money, but not certainly to benefit our community. As we can learn from the sad story of the Sistiana bay.
But, in facts, their support is across-the-board. How to forget the interrogation of Europarliamentarians of PDL (Partito delle Libertà – Party of Freedoms, Berlusconi) urging the intervention of the Europarliament in order to deprive the Port of Trieste of its fiscal advantages deriving from the Treaty of Peace, only to impose a super taxation on it, meant to favor Italian ports? Or the fact that other PDL deputies openly sided for the urbanization of the Old Port, in a fatal embrace with their colleagues of PD?
The so called Old Port would have to be transformed in a luxurious citadel by the sea, some kind of Balkan Monte Carlo. A business amounting to billions of Euro rising many questions: beginning with the infiltration of the Mafia, which as for this case, might precisely be the N’drangheta.
Yet, dismissing an international port in order to consign it to the real estate and housing speculation of Italian criminal organizations is not simple. Annex VIII of the Treaty of Peace clearly establishes the extraterritoriality of the Port of Trieste, granted by Resolution XVI of the Security Council of the United Nations as well. An international Port outside the jurisdiction of any single State: this is what the Port of Trieste is.
And the people of Trieste themselves, claiming their never ceased rights as citizens of the Free Territory, are now defending with strength their port by what is now clearly seen as an aggression to the freedom of Trieste. Without its international port, our city would have no future and Triestine people have understood it well.
This is why, back on February 10th, hundreds of supporters of the Movimento Trieste Libera – Free Trieste Movement (MTL – FTM) have constituted a human barrier demanding the immediate reactivation of the Free Zone of the Old Port, which has been suspended with an illegal decree of the Prefect of Trieste. On that date, hundreds of people guarded for 10 long hours, under the rain, the passages opened by the Italian authorities in the Northern Free Port. These passages do in facts represent the attack to international legality conduced by institutionalized Mafias.
For supporting this pacific action in defense of legality, twenty activists of the Movement have been put under investigation by the Italian judiciary authority. Yet, there is no investigation for the ones that violate the Treaty of Peace, meaning the very Constitution of the Republic of Italy, apparently, that only happens against whoever opposes to Mafias and requests the enforcement of the law. But the citizens won’t allow such forms of intimidation to stop them. The Northern Free Port is somehow like the Stalingrad of the Free Territory: the last defensive line, if that should fall, it would represent the end of all aspirations to freedom for the citizens of a State which currently is under the occupation of Italy.
And, as for the fact that the actions in defense of the Northern Free Port performed by FTM are bringing out good results, that appears clear: the Port Authority itself has now decided to transfer its headquarter in the Old Port, the one that should have been dismissed has suddenly become the center of attraction for worldwide investors, right inside Storehouse 26. Yes, storehouse 26, the last defensive stronghold of all the demonstrations which FTM organized in the past 2 years to defend the Port of Trieste. This means the place is not just a symbol when it comes to the ongoing, uprising of legality.
The decision of the Port Authority has obviously got on the nerves of the fierce group of speculators willing to violate international right. They are the ones that have already inserted the Northern Free Port in the urbanization previsions of the new, local strategic plan of the Municipality of Trieste. And, by now, they are risking to be accountable for that, even on a personal level. And this is how the lady president of the Port Authority, Marina Monassi, found herself under an immediate crossed-fire made of constant requests to remiss, which have even published on the newspaper “Il Piccolo” dated April 13th, 2014 as: the paper belongs to the local powers, so “Il Piccolo” does strongly supports the urbanization of the most important Port of the Mediterranean, and it curiously said demand on page 26 (!).
Is it an actual coincidence or a signal? What is certain is that the headquarter of the Port Authority has recently moved in Storehouse 26. And, between yesterday and today already, in what seems a well organized action, all along the street junction opened by the Italian Authorities and passing in front of Storehouse 26, several tires were abandoned on the concrete, causing a serious dangers. Does someone want to cause incidents? Is these Mafia-style warnings to who is trying to restore that legality that has been violated for decades in the most abandoned International Port of our planet?
The high-risk of this condition of abandonment which involves the whole Northern Free Port has often been emphasized by in the past 3 years by the FTM itself and by the courageous reports published on independent newspaper “La Voce di Trieste”.
Opening the Northern Free Port to traffic by creating the junction had lead to the insertion of the viability of the Port in that of the Municipality of Trieste, allowing the beginning of the very urbanization, forced in violation to the juridical status of the International Port and creating ulterior problems concerning safety which are currently rather hard to menage.
In conclusion, the Old Port of Trieste has become the center of a coordinated action of the Italian institutions to favor the dismissal of its precious Free Zone and the beginning of a huge housing speculation with Mafia-like characteristics which would harm the whole international community. This operation belongs to a bigger plan, which is an hostile action conduced in order to reduce the main port of the Adriatic to the role of fuel port for Italy and the EU only.
And now, here comes the unpreventable throw of the dice of the Italian Mafias, to try preventing the fall of an entire system of power which lives in the shadows. A last throw to which the whole Trieste must be able to stop by standing firm, in defense of its Port, in defense of its future.
